Audit Survey of Music Therapy in Supportive Cancer Care

Project team: Professor Norma Daykin and Professor Leslie Bunt

This national survey sought to gain a comprehensive picture of the extent and current role of music therapy in UK cancer care. In order to achieve this, a questionnaire was distributed to 51 managers of UK hospitals, hospices and CAM centres providing creative and complementary therapies. 67 (83.75%) completed questionnaires were returned.

The results show that regular use of music is common in cancer care and that music is valued by cancer care providers both as a way of enhancing the environment and as a therapeutic tool. The research shows the importance of creativity to people with cancer. It also provides insight into how music and creative therapies are used in cancer care, indicating that responses to music are complex and those facilitating music therapy need to be sensitive and skilled. Finally, there are clear signs that music therapy is popular with cancer care providers and patients, and is likely to expand in future.
