Professor of Social and Community Development

Chris Miller is Director of the Centre for Local Democracy, a multi-disciplinary research centre. He is also a Research Fellow in the Centre for Psycho-Social Studies at the University . He is also Editor of the international Community Development Journal, the leading peer reviewed journal unique in its field and published since 1966 by Oxford University Press. He is a Trustee on the ‘Bridge and Arts Foundation, a non-profit organisation concerned with conflict mediation, group and organisational development.

Chris is currently working with Professor Marilyn Taylor on a international comparative research project, funded by the Economic and Social Research Council’s ‘Non-Governmental Programme’, examining the dilemmas faced by non-governmental community-based organisations operating within new governance spaces. The research compares the experience of CBOs in England, Wales, Bulgaria and Nicaragua.

Chris recently completed with Professors Paul Hoggett and Marjorie Mayo an ESRC research project entitled, ‘Negotiating Ethical Dilemmas in Contested Communities’. This was concerned with the identification of ethical dilemmas and the coping strategies adopted by front-line professionals working in the area of regeneration and development.
