Hidden Disabilities

This type covers a broad range of different medical conditions such as, asthma, diabetes, epilepsy, M.E so it is important to obtain information on the individual. Do not however assume that each person will have the same symptoms if they have the same condition.

The following is some guidance when organising a meeting or contact with a student with a “hidden” impairment:

• The anxiety of self disclosure may be especially acute

• Offer to be flexible and make alternative meeting times if required

• Additional fatigue is likely to be caused by the meeting process

• The day-to-day effects of medication may be detrimental

• Give very clear information on the purpose of the meeting prior to and during the meeting

• Proximity to noises or atmospheric pollution can create difficulties

• Past medical history and the frequency of episodes may indicate the possibility of cancellation
