Welcome to the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences, Department of Nursing and Midwifery. Congratulations on obtaining a place to study on the Children’s Nursing programme.
To make sure everything is in place for induction week you should come along to the Glenside Campus on either Saturday or Sunday of Welcome Weekend. We will be able to ensure you have completed your online registration properly and check any outstanding academic certificates or Criminal Record Bureau checks which may be holding things up. Drop into the Glenside Student Centre on Saturday 15 January between 10am and 4pm or Sunday 16 January between 11am and 3pm. There will also be lots of things going on to help you settle into University life and it will be an opportunity for you to meet staff and other new students, so come along and join us!

The Children’s Nursing programme will begin on Monday 17 January 2011 at 09.30 at the Glenside Campus.

INDUCTION WEEK TIMETABLE
The induction week timetable is attached below, more information on timetables will be e-mailed to you before induction.
You will be able to access your individual timetable through myUWE once you have registered, using your UWE ID number. Please print out and bring a copy of your timetable with you for induction week, this will ensure you attend the correct sessions.
CONTACT DETAILS
If for any reason you are unable to commence this programme or have an administrative/academic query, please contact the relevant person as shown below as soon as possible.
IT
You will need to use a range of IT skills while you are a student with us so if you are a bit rusty it would be a good idea to put some practice in during the summer to ensure you are familiar with using e-mail, the internet and software such as Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint. UWE has developed a range of resources to help students which you will be directed to at the relevant time but for now you might find it useful to have a look at a recent version of our IT Survival Guide for students.
PLACEMENT
We offer all our students a rounded experience of acute and community children’s healthcare services. In order to do this there may be times when you need to travel to your placement within a wide area. You will be notified by the Practice Learning Unit so that you can organise your transport route and/or arrange alternative accommodation for the placement period.
REMINDER
In previous correspondence you will have already been informed about our requirements regarding:
• Academic certificates
• Criminal Records Bureau checks
• Occupational Health clearance
If any of these requirements are still outstanding you really must send the relevant paperwork to us, as instructed, as soon as possible, preferably ahead of Welcome Week/end and induction.
NHS STUDENT GRANT UNIT (SGU) BURSARIES
The initial bursary payment from NHS Student Bursaries should be paid within the first two weeks of registration. Students will receive a two month instalment in advance. This will be paid directly into your bank account.
Queries concerning non-payment of a bursary should be directed to the Student One Stop Shop (S1SS) or relevant Site Office. Students in receipt of a bursary must ensure that NHS Student Bursaries are informed of changes in bank details via the PSM10 form which is available from the S1SS and Site Offices.
You are advised to bring sufficient funds to support yourself for at least the first month of term.
UNIFORM
Will be provided free of charge, details of which will be given to you once you commence the programme. Uniform measurement will take place during induction week and will be ready for you prior to placement. Please remember that you will need to purchase suitable hospital/work shoes.
