Whether in a lecture, seminar or tutorial, open communication should be practised at all times. This includes facing the student group when speaking, avoiding obscuring the face by hands or gestures. Staff and students should be aware that beards, microphones and books can be obstructive to lip readers. Plain language should be used whenever possible, avoidance of jargon or colloquialisms and explanations given for specialist terminology.
