Over 1,800 disabled students are currently studying at the University, which represents approximately 7% of the total student population. The University aims to treat every student as an individual who may have different needs.
The Disability Service (formerly the Disability Resource Centre - DRC) is based at the Frenchay Campus, they offer advice and assistance to students with an impairment, medical condition, mental health issues or specific learning difficulty such as dyslexia who may require support to gain equal access to the curriculum. Disabled students who require assistance with orientation or support at the start of term should contact the DRC before arriving at the University to discuss support arrangements.
The Disability Service has produced a very useful information booklet for disabled students and a copy can be obtained one from the Glenside Student 1 Stop Shop.
The Disability Service can offer advice on:
• assessments of educational support needs
• advice on funding and arranging dyslexia identification tests
• claiming the Disabled Students Allowances (DSA)
• training in the use of assistive technology
• advice on study-related support
• arranging dyslexia tuition and other support
• co-ordination of support workers, such as readers or scribes
• information on local and national disability organisations and services
• facilities at UWE for disabled students
