What does lecture notes in advance mean?
The interpretation and meaning of ‘lecture notes in advance’ will depend on the intended use of the material. If it is meant to enhance the students understanding of the lecture then having access to it in advance so the prior preparation can be done will be of benefit to the student. The student could gain a better understanding of what the lecture will be covering or allow new terminology to be learnt before the lecture.

If however the material is supplementary and intended for use after the lecture or answers some questions asked in the lecture then clearly these can be given out afterwards. Academics should ensure that materials are given out or put onto UWE Online by the promised date.

The database should be consulted regularly to find out what the students prefered format of receiving the notes is i.e coloured paper, large font.

Who do I contact if I have a question regarding disability?
In the first instance, contact the Faculty Student Advisors who are all based in 1C01 and they will be able to advise on what the best course of action is.  It is best to contact them on the general email address of: HSC.StudentAdvisers@uwe.ac.uk

What do I do if the teaching and assessment is inaccessible?
If the teaching and assessment is inaccessible then you will need to check that you have been added to the Disability Database.  To do this, you will need to book an appointment to see one of the Faculty Student Advisors who will discuss your requirements with you and advise on what adjustments can be made.   The Database informs all teaching and assessment staff of what adjustments are being made on your behalf to ensure that all teaching and assessment is fully accessible.

How do I claim Disabled Students Allowances (DSA)?

Information on how to claim Disabled Students Allowances is available from the Disability Services website.

How long will it take for the equipment to arrive?
This is hard to say but the sooner the student contacts the FSAs who will refer them to the Disability resource Centre, the sooner they will get the funding for the equipment so they can order it.

I think I might be dyslexic what do I do next?
If you think that you might be dyslexic they the best thing to do is to book an appointment to see one of the Study Skills Tutors as they can book a Quickscan test to determine the likelihood that this is a the case. If after completing the testm, it indicates that the student might have a learning difficulty, then the student should book an appointment with the FSA who can advise as to what to do next.

Where are the disabled parking spaces?
There are a number of disabled parking spaces around the campus. This map indicates where they are.

I want to tape some lectures, who do I need to notify?
Some students find it very helpful to record the lectures they attend as it means that they can concentrate on what is being said and not have to write everything down. They will have it on tape and they can make notes from it at a later date. Students with poor concentration or reduced stamina who struggle with long lectures can find it very beneficial not to worry about missing important bits of information. If a student wants to this, they should approach the tutor to ask whether they can record a lecture.  The staff would have to have a very good justification for refusing this request as it might be highlighted as a reasonable adjustment and therefore they would be discriminating against the student if they refused. The tutor though might ask the student to sign a declaration that the material is the tutors intellectual property and that they do not share it with others and destroy it after use.

What do I do if I have no means of supporting my required adjustjments?

If a student is unable to claim DSA for whatever reason, but does have a geniune requirement for adjustments to be made, they should be advised to make an appointment with one of the Faculty Student Advisors.  They can email HSC.StudentAdvisers@uwe.ac.uk or book an appointment through reception.

A fellow student on my course has a disability and I want to learn more about it, what do I do?
Go to the section entitled 'Interacting with students with different disabilities' and this will give useful information to consider when interacting with fellow students on the course.

Do I need to tell different people in the faculty and on placement about my access requirements?
No, students should not have to tell individual people about their requirements as they should have been done so by the Faculty Student  Advisors once they were added to the Disability Database.  With the students permission, the FSA will inform the library, the module and programme leaders, Placement Learning Unit staff.  When students are allocated a placement, their mentor will be informed so as to ensure that all necessary access requirements are in place as soon as the student starts their placement.  If students encounter any problems, they should contact the FSA for assistance.
