Physical Accessibility

The University does have policies, procedures and practices to deal with the issues surrounding the physical accessibility of its premises and buildings. The Estates department are responsible for ensuring the UWE is fully accessible to people with a range of disabilities.

These includes:

• Building accessibility from ramps to lifts and doorway sizes

• Installation of automatic opening doors at the correct opening force

• Clear, legible and visible signage both around the campus and inside the buildings. Using pictograms if appropriate.

• Installation of fire alarm beacons as well as sirens for people with a hearing impairment.

• Checking lighting (internal, external and emergency)

• Ensuring the paths and walkways are level and there are no trip hazards

• Redecoration and ensuring the walls and doors are in contrasting colours for increased visibility

The university is bound by legislation to ensure that it provides a safe and accessible space for all staff, students and visitors. Adaptations to the physical environment though can be based on what is reasonable versus the cost to implement. Consideration can also be given to extent to which the adjustments would be effective, practicality, disruption and the availability of resources.

There is however a responsibility on all other users of the university to ensure that all areas remain accessible by ensuring that routes are clear of obstacles and that fire exits are not blocked.  Students should always obey the fire evacuation procedure and report any problems or failings to the appropriate person
