Cathryn Havard - Understanding cancer treatments - a patient-centred guide to assessment and care" Given the prevalence of cancer within the population and the increased amount of treatment that is now available and offered, you will encounter people with Cancer wherever you choose to work in the future. Cancer is not just one disease – it takes many forms and its progress and the eventual outcome varies considerably. In some cases this may be fatal, but it often appears to be forgotten that many people are treated and cured of their cancer, while for others the disease is successfully managed over a prolonged period of time. Understandably, a cancer diagnosis evokes fear and uncertainty but current thinking focuses on providing accurate information; an individualised treatment plan and enabling people to develop strategies to live with their cancer and regain some control. To support individuals throughout this process is interesting, rewarding - and the essence of nursing care - so come to this workshop and: Clarify your understanding about current approaches to cancer treatment and patient experiences. Explore issues related to effective communication and the provision of supportive care Identify useful sources of information, support and advice

Ian Fletcher – Pain management – case scenarios
“Each year, over 5 millions people in the UK will develop chronic pain, but only two thirds will recover.
Much more still needs to be done to improve outcomes for patients” Sir Liam Donaldson (2009) The key to starting effective pain management is not only understanding the all encompassing nature of pain, but also the fact that it is the patient / client who is the “expert” / final arbiter of their own experience of pain, not the practitioner. This session will therefore explore the foundation principles of pain management in acute and chronic pain including concepts such as pain physiology, the pain neuro-matrix, gate control theory, the analgesic ladder, adjuvant therapies etc. DoH (2009) 150 Years of the Annual Report of the Chief Medical .
