Blood
Blood is the fluid that flows through our body in a system of inter-connected vessels to tissues throughout the body. Blood leaves the heart in arteries, which branch into the smaller arterioles. In tissues blood flows through the thin walled capillaries that enable dissolved gases, nutrients and waste products to diffuse between the capillary network and the tissues. Blood then flows back to the heart via the vena cavae. About 8% of body weight is blood or on average 5 litres.
